Don’t be tempted to rush into applying a hair colour. Carry out a skin test to check you don’t have an allergy to any of the ingredients; if it’s a new colour, do a strand test to check the shade and stick to just one or two shades lighter or darker than your current colour to avoid brassiness, making your complexion look drawn-out.
If you have sensitive skin or simply want to reduce the amount of chemicals that you are using, opt for a gentle range without ammonia or resorcinol. Ammonia can be very irritating to the scalp and highly damaging to the hair fibre; it’s ammonia that gives normal hair colours their characteristically strong smell. Resorcinol also has a high irritation level and can have a flaking, scaling effect on the scalp.
Unless you want permanent colour, you could also avoid peroxide and p-phenylenediamine (PPD). PPD can cause an allergic reaction in a small number of people – resulting in swelling and blistering of the skin on the head and face. Find Naturtint natural hair dyes at www.naturesdream.co.uk.
